The Highland Scottish claymore is one of the most iconic and formidable swords in history, deeply associated with the Scottish Highlands and the warriors of Scotland.
The term “claymore” itself has come to refer to a specific style of large, two-handed sword that was favored by Scottish clans from the late Middle Ages to the 17th century.

One of the most distinctive features of the claymore is its hilt. The sword typically features a distinctive crossguard with “arms” that curve outwards, creating a wide cross.
This unique crossguard design provides both protection for the hands and an element of intimidation, as the outward curves were sometimes referred to as “lobster claws” due to their appearance. The grip of the sword is long enough to allow for two-handed use, giving the wielder enhanced control and strength when swinging the sword in battle.
The pommel at the end of the hilt is typically a simple, rounded or slightly flared shape, and serves to balance the sword while also preventing the hand from slipping off.

The claymore was often wielded in battle with a great deal of strength, using both hands for powerful swings. Its size and weight made it a weapon that required significant training and physical strength to wield effectively, but in return, it delivered devastating blows to opponents.
The claymore came into prominence in Scotland in the 15th and 16th centuries, during a period of intense clan warfare and conflict with the English. While it may have evolved from earlier medieval swords, the claymore gained its distinctive form and name during the 16th century. The term “claymore” is thought to derive from the Gaelic claidheamh mór, meaning “great sword,” referring to its imposing size and stature.

The claymore also has a strong presence in Scottish culture, appearing in museums, art, and ceremonial settings, where it is often displayed as a cherished relic of the past. It continues to be revered as a weapon that was integral to the defense of Scotland and a symbol of the fierce independence and strength of the Scottish people.
We have chosen to replicate this sword from a private collection as it exemplifies the classic features of the Claymore so well.
